Netflix announced on Thursday that its television adaptation of “The Overstory” — a novel written by Richard Powers that won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2019 — will be executive produced by Benioff, Weiss, and Jackman. A release date and casting details for the project are under wraps, though Deadline reported that it was possible that Jackman may have an acting role in the series. The publication also reported that Richard Robbins wrote the pilot script for the series and will also executive produce alongside Bernadette Caulfield, who previously served as an executive producer on “Game of Thrones” and is currently president of Benioff and Weiss’ production company....

If you suspect that exhibition issues abound, this weekend saw three new adult-oriented releases, led by Clint Eastwood’s “Cry Macho,” all of which had weak or worse domestic debuts. “Shang-Chi” was a dominant #1 in its third weekend and broke a record, however obscure: At just under $22 million, it is the best-ever gross for the third weekend in September. That record is a nice side effect of being a trailblazer: Before “Shang-Chi,” it was all but unheard of for a film with that much potential to open early in the month....

Eventually, one of the dogs, according to DiCaprio, fell into a frozen lake. “And then I went in. I didn’t understand what you do at a frozen lake,” DiCaprio said....

McKay wrote the character of astronomer Kate Dibiasky for Jennifer Lawrence, and the “Silver Linings Playbook” Oscar winner got the first read of the script. The Oscar winning writer behind “The Big Short” had long wanted to work with Lawrence. “I’ve known Jen for awhile,” McKay said earlier this year when asked how he landed two of the biggest A-listers in Hollywood in the same film. “One of the first meetings she ever did in Los Angeles after her first movie was with me when she was like 17 years old, maybe 18 years old....

The official synopsis for “Don’t Worry Darling” reads: “A 1950s housewife living with her husband in a utopian experimental community begins to worry that his glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets.” Wilde’s “Booksmart” co-screenwriter Katie Silberman wrote the film based on an original script by the Van Dyke brothers. The supporting cast includes Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, and Chris Pine. The first footage from the movie (below) shows Pugh’s character in an idyllic suburban setting, but something dark and twisted rages underneath the surface....
