While trans audiences may — and rightly so — be wary of a film that zeroes in so definitively on transitional surgery, it is precisely that laser focus that helps “Born to Be” avoid the many pitfalls for which trans films have been criticized....

HBO confirmed the renewal of Larry David’s Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning meta comedy series for a 12th season coming soon. After debuting on HBO in 2001 and completing 110 episodes to date, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” stars “Seinfeld” co-creator David as an over-the-top version of himself in a tongue-in-cheek (and merciless) depiction of his fictionalized life. Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, Cheryl Hines, Richard Lewis, Vince Vaughn, and Ted Danson will also return as series regulars....

Enter Season 3, where the show ventures further into the idea that faith also applies to who becomes worthy of trust and allegiance. Over that time, though, this Netflix documentary series has unlocked a nifty trick to better tell the stories of the drivers and teams that make up this worldwide auto racing circuit: It moves backwards. Series executive producer James Gay-Rees said that it’s been a helpful guiding force from the start. “It’s really liberating. “Funny Pages” centers on a New Jersey teen obsessed, like Kline was and clearly still is, with underground comics. After his art teacher and mentor dies in a shockingly horrific accident, Robert (Daniel Zolghadri) decides to quit school with the idea of devoting himself to his craft. Kline was in need of drawings to represent his protagonist’s body of work, and, soon, Ryan was on the case. “When you’re looking through the portfolio at the beginning, that was pretty much me riffing,” Ryan said....

“I wouldn’t feel comfortable in being a part of anything that has just egregious graphic violence towards women for no reason whatsoever, just because they want it to be tantalizing in a way that gets viewers,” Cooke said. “I was lucky enough to read the [prequel] script before, and it has changed a lot from the first few seasons [of ‘Thrones’]. I don’t think they’d be in their right minds to include any of that any more....

Hulu announced Tuesday that Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the hit animated sitcom “Rick and Morty,” is among the executive producers behind “Koala Man,” a new animated adult comedy series. The show comes from creator and executive producer Michael Cusack, who will voice the title character. Hulu ordered eight episodes of the series. Per the streamer, the show will center on a family patriarch (Cusack) who lives a not-so-secret identity as the titular hero who possesses a burning passion to snuff out petty crime and bring order the community....

“Soho” is Wright’s first directorial effort since his action romance “Baby Driver,” which became his top-grossing film to date in both the U.S. ($107 million) and worldwide ($226 million). The official “Last Night in Soho” synopsis from Focus Features reads: “Edgar Wright’s psychological thriller about a young girl, passionate in fashion design, who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it appears, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences…” In the new trailer, Thomasin McKenzie plays a fashion student — check out that Northern English accent — who moves to London and finds herself being transported back in time to the 1960s (specifically 1965 because of “Thunderball” being on the marquee?...

Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay helm the series, starring Peter Mullan, Benjamin Walker, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson among a large ensemble cast. But like so many rose-visioned romantics learn every New Years Eve, all the pomp, circumstance, and resolutions in the world aren’t always enough to evoke meaningful, lasting change. Despite minor improvements in its design and a winsome turn from Harper, “Love Life” Season 2 remains frustrating in its selective view of its central figure’s choices as well as its boxed-in outlook on love. For those seeking comfort in the familiar patterns of another decade-late coming-of-age story, perhaps Season 2 will prove just distracting enough....

Along with Cooper, the film’s cast includes Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, and Carey Mulligan, who plays Bernstein’s wife Felicia Montealegre. Cooper co-wrote the screenplay with “Spotlight” writer Josh Singer. “Maestro” also boosts some serious pedigree in the form of executive producers Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Spielberg originally intended to direct the film himself, and reached out to Cooper about playing Bernstein years ago. But Cooper was able to convince the “West Side Story” director to hand him the reins after showing him an early cut of “A Star Is Born....
