Ghosts are everywhere in Nikyatu Jusu’s atmospheric feature directorial debut, “Nanny,” though few of them look like we’ve come to expect from decades of horror films. Sometimes, it’s just a feeling, a particular twist of the wind. Sometimes, it’s a photograph. Sometimes, it’s a story. And, sometimes, just sometimes, it’s a whole person, gazing out from beyond, well, somewhere. From the start, there is a queasy energy to Jusu’s get-under-your-skin film, one made all the more unsettling to her dedication to showing a full-spectrum leading lady (your usual final girl, she is not) caught in a surprising milieu....
Director Ilya Naishuller loves a little misdirection. Case in point: his sophomore effort, the Bob Odenkirk action vehicle “Nobody,” which ostensibly follows the “Better Call Saul” actor as the eponymous nobody Hutch Mansell as he’s pushed to crazy ends after violent crime invades his suburban life. But with the innovative action minds of Naishuller, writer Derek Kolstad, and super-producers David Leitch and Kelly McCormick behind the project, there’s clearly something else going on here, a nice little surprise for audiences who might think they have the movie figured out....
By populating his sci-fi epic with characters operating on the margins of show business — a financially strapped horse trainer (Daniel Kaluuya), his attention-hungry sister (Keke Palmer), a grown-up child actor with a traumatic past (Steven Yeun), and a past his prime cinematographer (Michael Wincott) — Peele is able to pull back the curtain on the casualties of Hollywood magic even as he dazzles the audience with some pretty impressive magic of his own....
Crazy fan theories and wild trailer breakdowns aside, filmmaker Jordan Peele has been remarkably open about what his third film, “Nope,” is really about — from the actual UFO-centric plot to its underpinnings as a movie that’s also about moviemaking — even if that doesn’t seem to have so far satiated clue-obsessed moviegoers. “People are always trying to get me to spill secrets on the thing, and I’m like, ‘I can’t really tell you anything’ and also, ‘I don’t even know how to tell you what this movie is,’” star Keke Palmer told IndieWire....

Every word that first-time feature filmmaker Rebecca Hall uses to describe the genesis of her “Passing” vibrates with intensity. Her first experience reading the Nella Larsen novella she eventually adapted for the black-and-white period piece was like “being in a fever,” the pages flipping by as if she was “slightly possessed.” More than 13 years after first reading Larsen’s book, Hall has kept up that same passion for the material, enough to propel her through years of denials from Hollywood brass and the distinct possibility that the film would never get made the way she saw it....
Despite the obvious focal point of the journey, literally blasting off into space for a year-long mission on the International Space Station, “Proxima” is mostly invested in the minutiae of Sarah’s professional path and the painful intersections it has with her family life. Green, so often cast as the icy femme fatale, is devastatingly open-hearted as Sarah, believably juggling the unique pressures of both parts of her life. She is also her young daughter Stella’s (a remarkably assured Zélie Boulant) primary caretaker, which further complicates the price of her ambitions: who will be there for her when she takes off for an entire year?...
Though he only directed the first two episodes (and holds an executive producer credit through his production company, Scott Free), “Raised by Wolves” has all the markings of a career-culminating effort. Scott’s favorite toys are all here: androids, an alien planet, and monsters lurking in the dark. There’s even a female lead with incredible powers. Beyond these trademarks, the first six episodes explore his favorite questions, including the nature of humanity, the trappings of faith, and what shape our dystopian future might take....
The new film will pick up where the seventh and final season left off, with Mickey in the wind and Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. It will also take a page from “The Godfather Part II” by marrying the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story of 30 years ago. “When ‘Ray Donovan’ went off our air after seven great seasons, we heard from so many of its loyal fans that they were not ready to say goodbye to Ray and the wonderfully dysfunctional Donovan clan,” said Showtime head Gary Levine as part of the network’s announcement....

Most of the documentary was shot while Ferrara was promoting his last film with Dafoe, “Siberia,” at the Berlin Film Festival in February. Not that he bothers to explain that with anything as commonplace as captions or voiceovers. All the film offers is the chance to hang out with Ferrara for a while, seeing what he got up to this year, and hearing what was on his mind; if you don’t fancy doing that, well, he obviously couldn’t care less....
