Twisted true crime doc “My Old School” centers on Brandon Lee, a seemingly 16-year-old prodigy who enrolls himself at a prestigious high school outside of Glasgow, Scotland after claiming to have been privately tutored in Canada. The catch: Lee has multiple passports, like “retro” music, and physically stands out from his peers. Director Jono McLeod interviewed the real-life Lee who set 1990s Scotland ablaze following a nationwide scandal. However, Lee refused to be filmed for the documentary, so his interview was lip-synced by famed actor Alan Cumming, who portrays Lee in the film....

This was no ordinary film premiere — or even an ordinary Bond movie premiere. Yes, it was a lavish, star-studded black-tie gala in one of the capital’s grandest and most beloved buildings. But the event’s sense of occasion had its roots in March 2020, when Covid-19 cases were spiraling, and Broccoli and Wilson announced that they were postponing the release of “No Time To Die” from April to November. In retrospect, it was a sensible and even inevitable move, but at the time it was momentous....

As Hutch, the disgruntled suburbanite who resurrects his violent past to fight off hordes of Russian mobsters, Odenkirk becomes a ticking time bomb within the opening minutes. That’s where an amusing montage maps out his drab routine, as he takes out the trash and drives to his bland job as an auditor for his wife’s company, the days counted off through intertitles in rapid succession. When a couple of weak-willed robbers break into the family’s home at night, he has the chance to take out one of them as he wrestles with Hutch’s teen son (Gage Monroe)....

On the surface, “Noita,” which hails from three-person Finnish indie studio Nolla Games, appears straightforward. “Noita” is a 2D roguelike (die once and you restart at the beginning of the game) action platformer. Every game begins with your character, a faceless purple wizard, standing outside a mineshaft. You have a jetpack, two wands (this game’s version of weapons and tools), and a flask of water or another liquid. Head down into the cave, where you can run, jump, use your wands, and manage a small inventory of items....

However, none of her peers pulled off what Zhao has done. With star Frances McDormand and a cast almost entirely comprised of nomads found on the fly, Zhao shot the delicate road movie “Nomadland” in secret even as she tackled Hollywood’s biggest franchise machine. With “Nomadland” now scheduled for theatrical release December 4, Searchlight has positioned the movie as a serious Oscar contender playing all the major fall festivals — Venice, TIFF, and NYFF (as well as a drive-in premiere September 11 at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl produced in conjunction with Telluride)....

HBO unveiled the trailer for the six-part docuseries, which is directed by Cullen Hoback, on Wednesday. The premium cabler’s synopsis for the project reads reads: Spanning three years in the making and traversing the globe, the series follows Hoback on a labyrinthine journey to uncover the forces behind QAnon, a movement fueled by conspiracy theories that has grown in scope and political significance, chronicling its evolution in real time and revealing how “Q” uses information warfare to game the internet, hijack politics, and manipulate people’s thinking....

Director S.S. Rajamouli confirmed during a screening in Chicago that a sequel to his blockbuster period action film is in the works. “My father is the story writer for all my films,” Rajamouli said, via Variety. “We discussed a bit about [‘RRR 2’] and he’s working on the story.” Rajamouli’s father, screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, penned the first film. “RRR” made history as the most expensive Indian film with a reported budget of $72 million....

Addressing the past as the key to a better future is an idea still pertinent to “Russian Doll’s” Season 2 story engine. Lyonne takes another familiar concept — time travel — and sends her two leads off to learn more life lessons, as they ride the 6-train into bygone decades, no dying required. (“You’re a time traveler?” Nadia is asked, to which she replies, “I prefer time prisoner.”) Many of the series’ delights remain in its surprising ingenuity, so I won’t be saying much else about what happens....

Netflix’s hit series, starring and executive produced by Natasha Lyonne, returns for Season 2 this spring. Lyonne stars as Nadia, who escaped mortality’s time loop along with Alan (Charlie Barnett) in the first season. Now, Season 2 picks up four years later and promises to dive deeper into the existential themes of mortality by way of dark comedy and sci-fi explanations. The new season is set to premiere April 20....

Where to Watch ‘Single Drunk Female’: Freeform and Hulu Stories about sobriety don’t automatically lend themselves to positivity. Watching someone reclaim their life after hitting rock bottom doesn’t usually come hand in hand with cheery smiles and a smooth road. So it’s a credit to “Single Drunk Female” that the show manages to be driven by something other than despair while not ignoring the challenges that its main character faces....
