Though time travel is a common endeavor in this world, the alternate universe concocted by “Needle in a Timestack” is only slightly off from our current one: Photographer Janine edits photos with a stylus that she can hold in the air without touching the screen....

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s beloved animated creation about the sci-fi adventures of a zany and cynical scientist, Rick Sanchez, and his grandson Morty, is now in its fifth season on Adult Swim. The cable network marked its 20-year anniversary on Thursday, and fans can celebrate by streaming the entire Adult Swim library (“Rick & Morty” included) on HBO Max....

Ornelas needed a break after producing the long-running sitcom, “Superstore,” but, more importantly, she wanted to branch out on her own. “I’d worked for almost 10 years, at that time, on other people’s shows,” Ornelas told IndieWire. “I really wanted to do a Native anthology that was my idea that I was developing.” Her manager directed her to Schur, who was developing a series that had Native themes within it....

Julius Avery’s “Samaritan” opens with a giddy monologue (with lots of candy-colored, fast-moving comic panels for the visual assist) from Sam that tells us Samaritan’s backstory, and Bragi F. Schut’s screenplay (inspired by the Mythos Comics graphic novels he created with Marc Olivent and Renzo Podesta) doesn’t hesitate to pile on the exposition. Years ago, a pair of gifted brothers possessed of super-strength and power were made miserable by the denizens of Granite City, who burned down their house and killed their parents in the blaze....

Is “South Park” going through an existential crisis? Two episodes aren’t typically enough to elicit concern over a decades-old series already renewed through 2022, but when these two episodes are the sole output in 15 months, one has to wonder. Both hourlong specials — last October’s much-ballyhooed “Pandemic Special” and Wednesday night’s “Vaccination Special” — tell self-reflective stories set in our especially trying times, and both put not only this country on blast for its abhorrent pandemic response, but they also take a hard look at the show itself....

Nielsen’s latest report on the most viewed streaming TV shows of the week, which was based on data from September 20 to September 26, stated that “Squid Game” was viewed for 1.91 billion minutes, making it the most-viewed show of the week by a considerable margin. Netflix’s “Lucifer,” a consistently popular fantasy series that regularly tops Nielsen’s reports, ranked second, with 860 million minutes viewed. “Squid Game” has been the subject of spirited social media discussions for weeks and was widely expected to top Nielsen’s streaming rankings....

In the first footage from the upcoming fourth season, as shown in an HBO Max sizzle reel, Logan gives an impassioned speech to Waystar Royco employees as the conglomerate is poised to be sold to tech billionaire Lukas Matsson, played by Alexander Skarsgård. “We’re killing the opposition!” Logan says in the clip. “I’m going to build something better, faster, leaner, wilder. Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” hit theaters March 4, and while Robert Pattinson stunned as Bruce Wayne, we still have a few questions that the World’s Greatest Detective didn’t quite clear up. Pattinson certainly left his stamp on the famed DC superhero, following in the footsteps (most notably) of Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Val Kilmer, and Michael Keaton’s respective takes on the Caped Crusader. Co-written and directed by Reeves, “The Batman” admittedly is a “sad movie,” per star Pattinson....

“Monster Hunter” remains #1 at GooglePlay, and is the only title to rank on all four lists. Paul W.S. Anderson’s film, initially PVOD but now at standard pricing, has been #1 on all of the charts at different times. Worldwide theatrical gross is $30 million (on a reported $60 million budget), but its strong home performance could make up the loss. “Promising Young Woman” stayed at #1 at AppleTV, where viewer preferences suggest a more upscale crowd....

When the film was preparing for its 2019 DOC NYC premiere, IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson wrote that it was an “intelligent examination of the peace process in the Middle East through the lens of six wily, strategically sensitive negotiators who led the diplomatic talks over 25 years with a series of U.S., Israel, and Palestine leaders.” The film boasts a wide variety of talking heads, all of whom come at the material from a place of deep understanding and, occasionally, still very real emotional attachment to their quest....
